What is the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC)
The CRC is the UK’s mandatory climate change and energy saving scheme, which came into force in April 2010. It is central to the UK’s strategy for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as set out in the Government’s Climate Change Act 2008. It has been designed to raise awareness in large organisations, especially at senior level, and encourage changes in behaviour and infrastructure.
Qualification & Registration Penalties
Qualification for the scheme is based on half-hourly metered electricity usage. Your organisation will qualify for full participation if during the 2008 calendar year it had consumption of over 6,000,000 KWH. If consumption was under 6,000,000 KWH then you still need to register your details and your consumption in 2008.
So registration is required of everyone who:
1. Had at least one half-hourly electricity meter (HHM) settled on the half-hourly market across the whole organisation
2. Each meter and its consumption needs to be registered with the DECC
3. Failure to register can result in fines of £1,000 for everyone with consumption under 6,000,000 KWH and £5,000 per meter for everyone over 6,000,000 KWH
